Product Description What will you do when you get the call that a loved one has had a heart attack or a stroke? Or when you realize that a family member is too frail to live alone, but too healthy for a nursing home?
Journalist Paula Span shares the resonant narratives of several families who faced these questions. Each family contemplates the alternatives in elder care (from assisted living to multigenerational living to home care, nursing care, and at the end, hospice care) and chooses the right path for its needs. Span writes about the families' emotional challenges, their practical discoveries, and the good news that some of them find a situation that has worked for them and their loved ones. And many find joy in the duty of caring for an older loved one.
There are 45 million Americans caring for family members currently, and as the 77 million boomers continue to age, this number will only go up. Paula Span's stories are revealing and informative. They give a sense of all the emotional and practical factors that go into the major decisions about caregiving, so that readers will be better able to figure out what to do when the time comes for them and their loved ones.

It's a treasure on every level November 28, 2009 A Softer Place (Texas, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
An accomplished writer and caring daughter, Paula Span has privileged us with a frank and intimate account of families coping with the diminishing capabilities of their elderly parents. "When the Time Comes" is a beautifully written book; informative, realistic, respectful and loving, it holds your attention throughout, and takes down the barriers of apathy and fear surrounding any discussion involving aging. Paula takes you comfortably along as the families experience Home Care, Shared Households, Assisted Living, Nursing Homes and Hospice, interspersing each warm and entertaining narrative with valuable information and educated insight. You will be left with a renewed sense of confidence, even optimism, in your own ability to make the right decisions when the time comes.
Don't wait a moment longer to read this book.
A Must Book for Care Givers September 10, 2009 Diane Girl (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was extremely helpful in explaining all the different options a care giver needs to be familiar with in order to make intelligent decisions regarding an aging parent. This is an important contribution for anyone involved with how to best care for their aging loved ones.
Factual and affecting August 10, 2009 Nancy McKinley (Virginia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a relief to read this book and see how others are coping with a very difficult shared situation - a beloved elderly parent who needs a lot of help. Depending on where you are on the continuum, this book is either a clearheaded look at what's in store or a non-judgmental look back at the decisions we've already made about our parents' care.
You have to love a writer who, after reciting a particularly alarming fact, follows up with one word: "Yikes!"
I'd like to loan this book to everybody in the same situation I'm in with an elderly parent but I can't give it up. They'll just have to buy it themselves.
Beautiful book on a tough subject August 4, 2009 Mary Elizabeth Williams (New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We are a youth obsessed culture, and aging is remains one of the most largely ignored topics in the national dialogue. Yet as our families -- as we ourselves -- age, along comes Paula Span with a clear eyed, engagingly written exploration of the issues many of us face. Span reveals a variety of ways families are coping with their aging members, not with a litany of facts and stats but revealing, intimate portraits of real people. We get to know and care about the subjects, and along the way, we gain a much broader perspective on the way Americans are growing old.
An indispensable book.
Comprehensive and compassionate August 3, 2009 K. Springer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are many things attendant to parents' aging that you could never possibly dream of until you're directly facing them. In her book, WHEN THE TIME COMES, author Paula Span examines topics like ADLs, finances, legalities, and the complex kaleidoscope of emotions felt by both parent and child as families cope with assisted living, nursing homes, or hospice care. Whether for yourself, or for your loved ones, this book's an eye-opener. A definite must-read.
