Product Description
First published in 1990, this perennial best-seller has helped countless children build self-esteem and assertiveness skills. Newly revised and updated, it’s the ultimate resource for any kid who’s ever been picked on at school, bossed around, blamed for things he or she didn’t do, or treated unfairlyâand for any kid who sometimes feels frustrated, angry, powerless, or scared. Simple words and real-life examples show how children can stick up for themselves with other kids (including bullies and teasers), big sisters and brothers, even grown-ups. Kids learn how to build relationships, become responsible, manage their anger, grow a “feelings vocabulary,” make good choices, solve problems, set goals, and “store” happiness and pride. Questions from real kids are paired with answers about how to handle specific situations calmly, confidently, and effectively. A special note to parents and teachers explores the “self-esteem backlash” and explains what self-esteem really isâand why kids today need it more than ever. A wealth of practical, encouraging, realistic advice, this empowering little book is also recommended for parents, teachers, and counselors.

Thumbs up! February 11, 2010 Margarita C. (Chicago, IL) I really enjoy reading the book and I will surely recommend it to both parents and kids. It's so easy to read and the advice is simple and fun. I'm sure the book will help my daughters to have a positive self esteem and to have personal power.
Excellent read for my 9 yr old January 12, 2010 Angelica B. Yerger I highly recommend this book for any child that has an abusive adult in their lives. This book teaches a child what behavior is right and what is not. I have been reading it together with my son and last night we read how feelings are not right or wrong. "Feelings just are." This is just one of the many points the book talks about. It covers the same topics that you will read in an abusive relationship book for adults only written in a way that kids can understand. This gives kids the tools to understand bad behaviors in adults and realize it is not them.
Exceptional Resource on Self-esteem & Personal Power August 8, 2009 Susan Fitzell (Manchester, NH USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book an exceptional resource for working with teens on personal power and self-esteem. The author emphasizes a sense of ownership in the reader for his/her own happiness. I used it with students aged 15 through 18. I had to reword some of the stories because the book appears to be written for the pre-teen and young teen and can seem hokey to older teens. There is a teacher's guide to go with the book.
Develop assertiveness and self-esteem July 13, 2009 sabby First found this book in the library; a librarian found it when he did a search to find books that might help my son deal with bullying in his school. I read it, because book seemed to uninteresting to read to my 6-year-old; I found the book really helped me! I liked the layout, and the anecdotes, and the information was clearly and engagingly presented. When I use the book to work on my assertiveness, I expect my self-esteem will improve at the same time.
My children will benefit when they come accross the book in our home when they are older.
Stick Up for Yourself-Gershen Kaufman March 5, 2009 Maria Borg 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read this book and discussed it with my 9 and 12 year old sons. It's well explained and is an eye opener to feelings and thoughts that children do not often think about.
