Product Description Retirement does not have to mean the end of life--in fact it can mean a whole new beginning to the life you never had time to explore. In HOW TO RETIRE HAPPY, WILD, AND FREE, best-selling author Ernie J. Zelinksi shows that the key to enjoying an active and satisfying retirement is dependent on much more than just having adequate financial resources. It means paying attention to all aspects of life, including leisure activities, creative pursuits, physical and mental well-being, and solid social support. With its friendly format, lively cartoons, and captivating quotations, Zelinski's guide offers inspirational advice on how to follow your dreams instead of someone else's, how to put your retirement in proper perspective, and how to enjoy life after work.

Buy my book(s) February 23, 2010 C. Wagner (On the banks of the Wabash far away) A cornucopia of anecdotes and quotations. That gets a bit old after the first hundred pages. However, the cartoons, reminiscent of Jim Unger's "Herman", are somewhat entertaining. The cartoons are apparently drawn by the author, since no credits are given.
So, hey, I'm gonna retire, write a book about how being employed is not peachy and you can buy the multiple variations, systems and attend my seminars. Why don't we all retire now and sell our books about not working? Heck! Your job is probably being outsourced anyhow. We have the makings of a virtual perpetual motion machine.
But, to cut to the chase, turn to page 161 for the 7 essentials of a happy retirement. Health and cash flow are the biggies. Page 161 pays for reading all the quotes and anecdotes.
I suggest you don't wait until you retire to write the book, draw cartoons, or create art. These activities will make your life more pleasant, if you work or not!
The author is quite right that you will not get this wisdom from a financial advisor.
This book is not intellectual groundbreaking, but the reader should leave realizing that retirement is more than collecting a check the first of the month.
Surprise! Better than expected. February 10, 2010 Honest Jack (New York) I normally do not have an interest in books that explore your feelings and interests. I found this book to be easy to understand and was surprised by the provocative points that made me think about my future. More importantly, the author prompted me to consider 'what is really important'. I am seriously thinking about how I will retire and what will be the focus. I highly recommend this book for those who are up in the air about the future.
Packs in many options and insights perfect for any general lending library January 17, 2010 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free offers retirement basics that go far beyond the usual money-oriented approach, offering inspirational advice on how to enjoy life. From taking early retirement and putting money in perspective to make it work to generating purpose with creative goals and taking charge of health, this packs in many options and insights perfect for any general lending library.
A unique must-read! December 24, 2009 Duke I started off with high expectations given the title and the subtext. Although this is usually a set-up for disappointment, it ended up being my favorite read of 2009 (it's only Dec. 23, but I'm willing to call it). The book managed to fit an incredible amount of fantastic content covering so many considerations I hadn't thought of or just started to experience.
To put that in better context, I recently retired early from the financial industry, which gives me lots of time to read books that I can compare this one to. I have taken an active interest in all things finance related most of my life. After retiring, my wife and I were starting to encounter some of the issues in the book including not knowing what to do about being around each other all the time. We were doing quite well sorting them out one by one. With the help of this book we now know lots of other things to consider.
Another reviewer giving the book only 1 star quite astutely wrote that, "There are plenty of books about how to plan financially for retirement, but this book ignores that issue so glaringly..." I could not agree more! That's what makes this read so special. I have enough books on creating a nest egg, setting up residual income, tax planning, asset allocation, entrepreneurship, personal finance, budgeting.... That list is endless. My personal collection fills a room.
Perhaps there are other books that address the same issues, but How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free is the first one that I've come across. There should be more like it. It focuses on the non-financial aspects of life and retirement from which so many could benefit. I'm not only recommending it here, but in person to friends, family and strangers. Why not? This is important information about what to consider to create a happy and fulfilling life.
Settle your retirement nerves! November 30, 2009 J.B. (New Zealand) After a lifetime (or it seems that way) in a job there are bound to be misgivings about whether you have made the right decision. Or there were for me. I pre-viewed 'How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free' on the internet and decided it was worth a closer look. And it was. I now have it on the bookshelf, already bookmarked at the page I know will settle me down the next time I start to lose my confidence and forget that I am on my way to following my dream!
