Product Description DIVDIVDIVHailed as the #8220;savior#8221; of Venetian painting by Jacob Burckhardt and declared by Albrecht Duerer to be the foremost painter of the city, Giovanni Bellini is a pivotal figure in the development of Italian Renaissance art. With IGiovanni Bellini/I, renowned art historian Oskar Baetschmann charts the fraught trajectory of Bellini#8217;s career, highlighting the crucial works that established his far-reaching influence in the Renaissance. /DIVDIVBRThe artist struggled to break out of the long shadow cast by his accomplished father Jacopo and father-in-law Andrea Mantegna, and Baetschmann chronicles Bellini#8217;s development of distinct aesthetic and painting techniques that enabled him to set himself apart. Bellini also insisted on choosing his own subjects and themes, independent of the preferences of his patron Isabella d#8217;Este, and thus set new standards for the role of the artist./DIVDIVBRAnchoring the analysis are a wealth of vibrant color reproductions that include such famous works as IThe Feast of the Gods/I and IMadonna and Child/I, as well as photographs of Bellini#8217;s lauded altar-pieces at the churches of San Giobbe, Murano, and San Zaccania. Drawing on these masterpieces, Baetschmann argues that Bellini#8217;s artistry and skillful blending of colors created a new aesthetic more akin to music than to previous approaches to painting. And by leading viewers to understand this subtle, refined sensibility, Bellini transformed them into knowledgeable admirers of art./DIVDIVBRA lushly illustrated and expansive study, IGiovanni Bellini/I is essential for all historians and admirers of Renaissance art./DIV/DIV/DIV (20080426)

well written and up to date, but the colours ... May 10, 2008 Walter Methlagl (Hall in Tirol, Austria) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Many of Giovanni Bellinis' paintings have been restored recently and high quality images have been made in occasion of various exhibitions (f.e. "Il colore ritrovato", Venice 2000). br /Unfortunately the author ignores these efforts and/or shows too little interest in modern colour management. br /This is a shame, because the "lyrics" are really well done.
