Product Description
Not only accepting but also celebrating getting old, this inspirational and illuminating work looks at the many facets of the aging process, from purposes and challenges to struggles and surprises. Central throughout is a call to cherish the blessing of aging as a natural part of life that is active, productive, and deeply rewarding. Perhaps the most important dimension revealed lies in the awareness that there is a purpose to aging and intention built into every stage of life. Chittister reflects on many key issues, including the temptation towards isolation, the need to stay involved, the importance of health and well-being, what happens when old relationships end or shift, the fear of tomorrow, and the mystery of forever. Readers are encouraged to surmount their fears of getting older and find beauty in aging well.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book for older readers   February 12, 2010
Dorothy (Stevensville MT USA)
This is a great book for people in the last few decades of life. Sr Joan describes the trials and rewards of living into old age. I particularly like the end of each chapter where she describes the burdens and the blessings of each facet of growing old. Since I am experiencing many of these in my seventh decade of life it is reasurring to have her afirm what is so much the tasks and trials of living into our 70s, 80s and beyond. I have shared this book with many of my friends and will reread it many times myself.

I used this book in a study group from my church. The ages were from a little over 65 to almost 80 years. I felt the information contained in the book was worth while and good to have around for review in the years to come.

3 out of 5 stars The Gift of Years   December 16, 2009
Robert K. Smith (Lakeland, FL, USA)
This book was recommended to me at a "Planning fot Tomorrow" conference. I would hightly recommend it for those who are apporaching or in their 6th decade (perhpas even before for those who are more organized). This book deals with a subject that is vital to emotional and spiritual health for those who are entering into retirement. Most of us have worked at a vocation or at least a work-a-day job all our lives. We are defined by "High my name is _____. And you are ____? What do you do?" How does one answer this question when he or she hangs up the word processor? Is there more to me than just what I do to make money? Is there a life after work? What will the quality of that life be? How do I hold on to my self-esteem when I can't do what I used to do? We all have multiple questions surrounding this life transition. This author deals with the issue in the most responsible and enlightening way. She is one of my favorite authors and speakers. It is worth the read!
