Product Description
This extraordinary exhibition catalogue explores the rare works of one of the most enigmatic painters of the Renaissance, Zorzi da Castelfranco-universally known as Giorgione (Castelfranco Veneto, 1478-Venezia, 1510)-examining 15 out of an oeuvre of his 25 attributed paintings. Fellow student of Titian under Giovanni Bellini in Venice, almost nothing is known of Giorgione's life except that he worked in Venice, undertook various important commissions in oil and fresco, and died of the plague in his early 30s. A major innovator, he is acclaimed as the father of modern Venetian painting of the 16th century. In his revolutionary brushwork he skilfully combined Leonardo's sfumato with the colours and the thin layers of paint favoured by the Old Flemish masters to give a new dimension to light and colour. This monograph features masterpieces by Giorgione such as The Tempest, The Old Woman, The Nude, the recently restored Altarpiece of the Cathedral of Castelfranco, Christ Carrying the Cross, Three Philosophers and Laura as well as the only drawing by Giorgione View of Castel San Zeno at Montagnana and a Sitting Figure. Some seminal examples of works by Bellini, Titian, Duerer and Cranach help to place Giorgione's art in context and to document his influence on later painters. A team of international art historians and critics contribute original essays to the richly illustrated and well-documented book that features new discoveries in Giorgione's technique, an analysis of the results of restoration, and an updated bibliography.

Don't be fooled by the images - mostly scholarly work August 26, 2007 Talia (U.S.) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you are looking for an actual art book loaded with full color images of the artist's work, you may be disappointed in this one. Being fully aware that there are only about 30 works of art attributed to this master, I still have a major problem with a book that's advertised in the way it is here. It looks like much more than it actually is, unless you wish to have an in-depth study. If that's the case, then this is the book for you, it is very detailed and informative on the artist's life and the research behind his works. But if you want more art than text, then this is not the book for you. This falls into the category of book that is basically textbook, with only 20 percent being actual art. Be aware before buying.
The Italian Vermeer April 7, 2007 Claude Reich (Florianopolis, Brazil and Paris, France) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Very few paintings by Giorgione survive and very few aspects of his life are known to us. This book, the catalogue for an exhibition that was held in Vienna in 2004, successfully explores the career of this mysterious painter, master of light and colour. Very well documented on provenances and meanings, full of high-quality illustrations, it is a very valuable tool for anyone interested in Venetian painting. The book is divided into several essays and studies the sources that inspired the artist (Jewish culture, astrological science...), his critical reception, some of his masterpieces (The Three Philosophers, The Tempest), the influence of the Northern School of painting (especially German, with Duerer who traveled to Venice in 1505-1507), the importance of everyday life and allegory in his art, etc. It also dwells on the origins of the Viennese collection of Giorgione's paintings, which is the richest in the world. Highly recommended for the quality of the text and illustrations.
