Wonderful book to interest your child in reading November 30, 2008 Jeri Nevermind (Idaho) Reading aloud to your child is simply crucial to your child's development. br / br /It's also a perfect quiet time for a parent to spend with a child, a cuddle at the end of the day. As the author points out, children who are read to are much more ready for school, and go on to enjoy reading much more. br / br /I do not, however, agree, with his take on phonics. The research does not agree with him, either. Although the author points out children he has known who have learned to read with whole language: "Josephine was read the same stories repeatedly...Josie taught herself to read using whole language" (p 160). br / br /There has been a great deal of research done on the subject, and it is clear that phonics helps children to read better.
Reading Magic July 17, 2008 E. wyatt (colorado) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was hooked on this book from page one! The powerful and positive impact of reading aloud to children, and continuing to read to children as they age, is discussed throughout this book. Reading aloud is validated as time well-spent in the classroom and at home. The text is written in a personal, enthusiastic, straight-forward style which I found appealing. Reading Magic would be a wonderful book to recommend to parents as it does not contain "teacher talk". This book is also filled with practical advice to support student reading at home or school, and at varied ages.A very helpful book!
Great book for parents and educators! July 17, 2008 S. Rickard 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In Mem Fox's book, she thoroughly lays out her plan for changing the face of early literacy - by convincing all parents and families of the importance of reading aloud to their children. In an easy-to-read format, she tells families the process she has found most successful in reading aloud to children. She emphasizes the importance of all family members, including men, to read aloud to their children. Fox pushes reading aloud because hearing words read aloud helps "the thought connections in the brain, the more language a child experiences - through books and conversations with others, not passively from television - the more advantaged socially, educationally and in every way that child will be for the rest of his or her life." (pp. 17-18). I would recommend this book for parents and educators alike. It is a quick read, and provides a sound foundation for its content.
Reading Magic- A great resource for parents July 16, 2008 Nicole Addy Reading Magic is a book all about reading aloud to young children. Anyone who has a young child in their lives should read this book. As an educator I found portions of this book to be about things that I already believed. The format in which Mem Fox writes this book makes it easy to read and easy to understand. Educators can have the tendency to speak their own language. I appreciate that this book is written in a language that all can understand regardless if you have a background in education or not. The book is written with the intended audience of parents of young children. br /One thing I do have to say is that Mem Fox makes it seem as though the only answer to learning to read is to be read aloud to as a child. While I am not going to argue the extreme value of reading aloud to young children I do believe that there are many parents who read aloud to their children just as much as Fox recommends and yet their children are still struggling readers. br /I have recommended this book to the many parents of young children. I think that if parents were to know and understand the importance of reading aloud to their children they would be willing to read as much as they could. This book is also a great affirmation for parents who are already reading aloud to their children!
Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever July 15, 2008 Sandra K. Mascio (Denver, Colorado) As a teacher of reading, I will be recommending Mem Fox's new edition of Reading Magic to the parents of my first grade students. An easy read, the book is filled with details about the why's and how's of reading aloud to children. Her points are clearly demonstrated through anecdotal stories as well as by Judy Horacek's astute illustrations. br / Fox begins by providing reasons why reading aloud is so important, not the least of which is that children become capable readers. She then clearly describes, without burdensome education-ese, how children learn to read. (And, from my teaching experiences, I will tell you that she is right on in her descriptions.) Next, she explains how and when to read and even provides a brief list of what to read aloud to children. br / My only wish, as a professional educator, is that Fox had included more references and statistical background for her assertions. However, I acknowledge that her audience in this endeavor is parents. For that reason, I am right beside Fox as she encourages parents to read, read, and read some more to their young children. br / Mem Fox is on a mission--and I hope she succeeds! br /
