Product Description This volume combines interviews and photographs to document the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered parents and their children. It allows all of the family members to speak candidly about their lives, their relationships and the ways in which they have dealt with the pressures of homophobia. Included in the book are people from a diverse array of racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds, representing a wide range of family structures. Together, they provide clear evidence that family roles and responsibilities need not be based on gender, and that children thrive in an atmosphere in which understanding, respect and love transcend the prejudices of the day.

Does Love Make a Family? February 7, 2008 Amaranth (Northern California) "Love makes a family" originally started as a photo exhibition depicting gay, lesbian, transgenderbisexual families. The exhibition toured the US- and there were even different versions of it,one for kids, another for adults. It does beg the question- if it's so family-friendlyall about families, why did there have to be different versions? The exhibition faced controversy as it toured public libraries. Though it initially fanned the flames of controversy, its message came to be seen as ubiquitous. Gay parenting is more accepted than gay marriage;it's commonplace for same-sex couples to have children. br / br /"Love makes a family" was the spoonful of sugar that made the medicine go down. One can sympathize with the families' struggles. It's not just the case of two men or two women raising children;there are also bisexuals and the transgendered. The book's philosophy can be summed up as-family is how you define it. A free-for-all. Granted, the photography is beautiful;in a sense,"Love makes a family" is a great queer parenting coffee table book. (However, the amount of text is dauntingat times intrusive) br / br /"Love makes a family" shows how times have changed. Back when the exhibition traveled from coast to coast, from Boston to Portland, New York City to Dallas, people debated gay parenting. Now, a queer family is any other kind of family.

This is a must have for anyone with an alternative family. We can't wait to share this book with our family friends.
Very Interesting, Very Surprising January 26, 2000 David Vasquez (California, USA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
What I enjoyed about this book is that it covered not only the people like me (gay, male, plans to have children), but it also gave me an insight into some others who have very different lives but the same issues of alternative-ness. It actually contained a few surprises and gave me some ideas about how a family could be built from things I'd never considered before.

a look into the lives of different people. it makes one think that one in simular cercumstances is not alone.A infomative book that shows real people in real lives. well done!! It does need though, more family portrates of transgendered people. Im glad I waited over two monthes for this book.
A New Book from FAMILY DIVERSITY PROJECTS June 14, 1999 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
If an image is worth a thousand words, then Love Makes a Family, a book of photographs by Gigi Kaeser, edited by Peggy Gillespie, speaks for itself. The book's vivid black and white photographs and personal stories send a powerful message about diversity in America. Together, the images and text challenge heterosexual assumptions and stereotypes. With more than 40 family portraits and personal interviews, the book captures the essence and experiences of Lesbian, Gay, bisexual and transgender families of all kinds... -Terrance Lee Pitts, Washington Blade
