Product Description The Cambridge Grammar of English is a major new reference grammar from the world's leading grammar publisher. Using ground breaking language research, it offers clear explanations of spoken and written English based on real everyday usage. A clear two-part structure makes the book particularly user-friendly. In the first section, A-Z entries give more attention to lexico-grammar and other language areas that tend to be neglected in grammar references. The second section covers traditional grammatical categories such as tense, clause structure and parts of speech. The accompanying CD-ROM makes the Cambridge Grammar of English even more accessible with: * The whole book in handy, searchable format. * Audio recordings of all the examples from the book. * Links to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary online for instant definitions of new vocabulary.
Book Description A major new reference grammar offering the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of spoken and written English based on real everyday usage.

English in seven years November 18, 2008 G. Richards (South Africa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It takes a newborn baby seven years to master his mother language. By the time he gets five, he's already fluent in the language. It takes another two years to master some of the more advanced grammar patterns. Contrary to popular belief, adults can master a new language and be just as good as a native speaker. I was introduced to English five years ago. This book has helped me a lot in my journey to perfection. It takes about 2000 pages to explain English. Think about it, we have cracked the language! Nothing more to explain. You too can know it all! "Cambridge Grammar of English" concentrates a lot on spoken grammar. Thank God for that! Have you ever wondered why it is so difficult to understand grammar when someone asks you to point out the noun phrase or adverb clause etc? Well, when you understand the principles of spoken gramman, everything will fall into place, everything! Oh, and if you were wondering why a native speaker should buy a book like this, think again! Ask yourself this: can you punctuate? It is impossible to know the 23 uses of the comma without knowing what a subordinate clause is. And once you know all this everything becomes so easy... georgerichards@webmail.co.za br /
Quality Grammar Reference October 27, 2008 Ross Terelle 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I first reviewed this book in the summer of 2006 when I was a student in a CELTA course. I had purchased numerous books in preperation for Cambridge course, and all of the books (without exception) were unable to help me. I bought and used Parrot's "Grammar for English Language Teacher's", Swan's "Practical English Usage", Betty Azar's "Understanding and Using English Grammar", Murphy's "English Grammar in Use", among other books. br / br /Each of the aforementioned books serves a specific purpose and many people like them for a variety of reason. I Prefer the "Cambridge Grammar of English" over all those books for the following reasons: br /1) Cambridge is clear and to the point br /2) Numerous examples help the reader to understand the grammar br /3) It is comphrenshive but not exhaustive br / br /The things I dislike are: br /1) It is large and heavy (hard and softcover) br /2) It is not available in many bookshops br /3) I think that hte price is a little high br /4) I haven't yet seen an e-book or Kindle version br / br /In CELTA and Trinity courses for EFL teachers, there are assignments that require the students to research and answer questions on grammar and other topics. I had a difficult and frustrating time looking through Parrot's and Swan's books (he has more than 1) just to constantly find that the answers were not in them. On the other hand, "Cambridge Grammar of English" had the answers I needed and clearly explained them to me. For example, many teachers had trouble with relative pronouns. Although the name sounds difficult, it is not a tough thing to learn, and Cambridge deals nicely with this. br / br /I carried (literally) about 10 books with me to my CELTA course and THEN I found out about this book. One of my course trainers recommended this book to me and I gave it a good lookover. It would have saved me a lot of time if I had bought it first, but it was also new in 2006. If you are looking for a grammar reference book (ie something that explains how to use the passive voice or the subjunctive) then this is the only reference book that you will need for most purposes. For CELTA and Trinity courses it is more than adequate - the other books I mentioned are not suitable. At best they give a quick answer (if even), but usually they don't explain what is needed and give only 1 or maybe 2 examples...maybe. Also, not one of them covers all the topics that you will deal with on CELTA, which means that you will have to purchase several books. Again, it depends on your goals. If you really want to learn, then Cambridge is the book to buy. br / br /Though it is heavy and I'm unsure about the value of the CD ROM because I'm far more concerned with the actual book itself, this books can replace 3 or 4 books that can add up to more than the cost of this one - Parrott, Swan, Azar etc. br / br /Looking at the hardcover and softcover editions I didn't notice any difference other than the weight and price. But the softcover seemed to be ok as far as quality was concerned; I just wouldn't throw it aroo\und in my bag everyday. Remember that this is a reference book and is meant for either the office at school or home library. br / br /In addition, if you are a teacher who cares about providing accurate and timely responses to your students questions, then this book will help you to do that. If you work in Germany, then you NEED this book because the old excuse, "oh, it's just English" won't satisfy your students. They pay a lot of money and expect you to know your material. If you don't know it, then you can use the well designed index to find the answers to their questions and save your job! Also, it is easy to understand if you are American or British. br / br /Don't buy 4 or 5 other books because this one will suffice. I learnt the hard way...
Excellent Grammar for Learners June 8, 2008 Juarez Bochi (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This grammar is very different from any other grammar that I've ever seen. Instead of saying what is 'correct' and what's not, it also describes how English is actually used by native speakers. br / br /This is specially useful for those who are learning English as second language, like myself, because it contains a lot of information on frequency of usage that helps on choosing words (between also, as well and too for instance) and has lots of warnings of common English learners mistakes. br / br /Disclaimer: Sorry for any English error. I've not read all the grammar already. :-)
