Is "legislator" pronounced with an "er" sound at the end or an "or"? Is the Jewish festival of lights spelled "Chanukah," "Hanuka," or "Hanukkah"? The dictionary includes more than 150,000 entries, including brief biographical and geographical notes and useful drawings and diagrams (depictions of four kinds of buoys, for example). The guide to pronunciation and symbols is given on every other page, handy for those who don't like to refer to the inside cover each time they forget how to pronounce the sound of the schwa (of course, the guides on the inside and front covers are more extensive). Starred words refer to Americanisms, which number more than 11,000, such as "hornswoggle" and "Hopi" and "kitchenette." The definitions themselves are clear and simple and seldom have you scurrying to another page for a definition of the definition. I had to get a hard back dictionary for my Eng 101 class for a vocabulary project and found that the definitions weren't lengthy enough for complete understanding. I got tired of looking up synonyms, but the CD-ROM is very useful.

I purchased this dictionary from Caiman and there is supposed to be a CD with it. They never sent it to me and when I complained they asked me to send it back. I want the CD not a refund. It is a nice dictionary and I would love to have the computer version for my laptop. br /

I've been using it for nearly ten years at school (I teach English-Italian translation at the university), and it's the most frequent advice that I give my students. The CD it contains is estremely comfortable and well done, you can upload it once and then use it as much as you want, on more than one computer, you don't have to keep it in to make it work. By the way, the person who wrote the worst review, as you can notice, doesn't have much literacy in English language.
