Product Description At age twelve, Cassandra Madden fell in love with Jefferson Ames, a young man she met at one of her mother's business conferences. Over the years, during periods of loneliness and struggle, Cassie held on to this unrequited love in order to cope with her isolated heart and the pain of a cold mother. Even when Cassie grew up, went off to college, and met a man she thought she'd marry, her heart yearned for Jeff.PIn a decisive moment, she breaks off the pending engagement and travels to Williamsburg, Virginia, where the now-widowed Jeff lives with his young daughter. Cassie becomes the child's nanny, but, even though she sees the object of her desire every day, Jeff has yet to even notice her.PThen, one day, she hears shots coming from the mansion of Althea Fairmont, an eccentric woman who is thought of as the world's greatest living actress. Cassie runs to investigate, and, in an instant, her safe little life is turned upside down. She begins to learn that all the people around her aren't who they claim to be. Everyone has secrets -- and until Cassie unravels those secrets, she and Jeff will never have a chance to be happy together.

I have no idea what this book is about? December 4, 2008 J. Kollasch (Vadnais Heights, MN) Where do I start? I have no idea what the plot of this book was, and I just finished reading it! Cassie falls in love with Jefferson Ames as a girl of 12, and she carries that love into adulthood. Instead of going out and getting married after college and getting a job she calls off her engagement to move closer to a now widowed Jeff. She weasels her way into his family and somehow becomes his nanny. As far as I can tell this is the only plotline I could understand. Then in a tangled web of events Cassie meets her elusive next door neighbor, an aged movie star (the greatest movie star of all time) who is also a spy for the government. Upon meeting her Cassie she reveals things about Jeff that makes Cassie question her complete devotion to him and all of the things she thought she knew about the man she had loved for most of her life. Jeff's whole life is a maze of secrets and Cassie wants to get to the bottom of them before its too late. There's also several murder mystery plot lines added into this that are tied into the movie star/spy but there's so many odd story threads that its difficult to tell what is actually pertinant to the storyline and what isn't. br / br /This book is horrible! Every so often I got glimpses of what her writing used to be, but for the most part it was just a jumbled mess of confusion. Cassie is so naive and Jeff is so condescending that it made me dislike both of the main characters. Some of the plots she created were just too far out there to be believeable, and in the end it seemed like everyone was some sort of spy for the government (which is apparently easier to write than to actually develop some characters.) I always go out and buy Jude's books as soon as they hit the bookstore but I might hesitate the next time I see a new one of her titles. If you want to read a book by her that's not terrible may I suggest "Remebrance" or her "Velvet" series.
Skip This One November 2, 2008 L. Clover (Iowa) I forced myself to read it. The character were shallow, the plot lame. I felt like I was wandering through a maze. No sparks between the main characters. Mundane. br / br /I recommend skipping this one.
So much potential... October 12, 2008 DeniseW. (Sugar Hill, GA USA) It started off well...but, then it stalled. The romance was buried beneath all kinds of crazy, secret plot lines...none of which were really given any depth. I was also a little concerned about the stability of the main character. What started off as an innocent adolescent crush came real close to a manipulative stalking!
Not much substance September 9, 2008 Pat Therneau I read Jude Deveraux for something to read not deep thoughts so this book was very similar to most of her books. The first part drags in spots and the ending is rushed wrapped up with less explaination than I would like.
Secrets September 8, 2008 A. Lafean (Maryland) I love Jude Deveraux and have EVERY one of her books. I have read them over and over and am always anxious for her next to come out. I have to say that I was a little dissapointed with this one. As other reviewers have said...there is no romance, no sex, nothing that really grabs at the reader. I feel like this book was one that she just sat down and wrote on one rainy day when she had nothing better to do. br /This book won't change my mind about her as an author because I know her next will be better. If you want to read it, I would suggest going to the library instead of buying it. Then decide if you think it is a keeper.
