4 out of 5 stars Wow, he's hot.   January 7, 2009

Conrad is super hot. He has a lot going on. I loved his romantic side. Wouldn't it be great to hold on to him while he teleports you over to Italy for dinner. This was a really good story lots going on. I love him most of all so far.

I usually don't give books five stars, but the fact is I can't find much to complain about with this one--it was a delightful page-turner. br / br /The Plot: br / br /Conrad is one of the Fallen vampires, having committed the forbidden act of killing while feeding. He has become mad and powerful, as well as cold. His brothers trap him in an old house in an attempt to rehabilitate him. This house happens to be the haunting place of ghost Neomi, who in life was a beautiful ballerina. Conrad is the only one who can see Neomi, and he quickly comes to enjoy her company--despite the fact that she is as insubstantial as air. br / br /What Makes it A Five Star Read: br / br /I was initially uncertain about the concept of a ghost as the female lead--but as it turns out, it makes the story. The imagery of the long-dead ballerina is beautiful and fascinating. To me it was incredibly romantic to have two characters fall in love although they could not touch one another. br / br /As the story unfolds, we see a lot of return characters from previous books--including Nikolai, Sebastian, Bowen, and Mariketa. If you are a fan of the series, this is a nice bonus. br / br /I recommend this book to any fan of The Immortals After Dark series. I highly recommend the series to any paranormal romance fans looking for something fun and different. The reading order is as follows: br / br /Playing Easy to Get (An Anthology that Includes Nikolai's story) br /A Hunger Like No Other br /No Rest for the Wicked br /Wicked Deeds on a Winters Night br /Dark Needs at Night's Edge br /Dark Desires After Dusk br /Kiss of a Demon King br /

4 out of 5 stars The crazy one is the most endearing   December 27, 2008

Of all the Kresley Cole "The Immortals After Dark" series, I'd have to say that A Hunger Like No Other (The Immortals After Dark Series, Book 1) is the most solid story of the five books released as of December 2008 with both hero and heroine equally likable and sexy. br / br /That said, my favorite of the series thus far is Dark Needs at Night's Edge (The Immortals After Dark, Book 4) and most of the enjoyment comes from the unique hero, Conrad Wroth, the brother of Nikolai and Sebastian. br / br /Conrad is a mentally unhinged vampire who is imprisoned (for lack of a better word) in a New Orleans mansion. Any New Orleans mansion worth its salt in water has to be haunted and Elancourt is haunted by the spirit of murdered ballerina, Neomi Laress. br / br /As a nice twist to the ever expanding paranormal and erotic genre, Neomi is the experienced one of the couple. Conrad, as is established for vampires in Cole's series, literally mate with the one who is their Bride. Given Conrad's background as a warrior, he is the virgin of the two and going mad from a life that is never ending. br / br /There are the usual quirks of Cole's Immortals series in this novel. We meet up with previous characters like Mariketa and Bowe (of Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (The Immortals After Dark, Book 3) as well as Conrad's brothers and wives. There are scuffles between a few factions of the Lore which put the heroine in trouble. br / br /But really, the dynamic that holds this story together is what makes all good love stories work: The chemistry of the hero and heroine which Neomi and Conrad have in spades. br / br /What I appreciated best about the story and probably what gives this book the edge over the other books in this series is that Conrad never truly loses all of his unhinged edge and at the same time, he never fully becomes an obnoxious alpha male either. Conrad sits on a precarious ledge where he is good and bad and neither at the same time which makes him a truly intriguing hero. br / br /Neomi isn't quite as interesting to me but I think it is because Conrad was so interesting. Yet, she has a unique vulnerability that no other Cole heroines have in that she starts out mortal. How the issue of her mortality, her spirit form and how to resolve her mating with an immortal is resolved is one of the unique twists in the series. br / br /Again, I would not say that this is the best book of the lot as I firmly believe that A Hunger Like No Other (The Immortals After Dark Series, Book 1) occupies that spot and to be honest, I am really looking forward to Rydstrom's story in Kiss of a Demon King (The Immortals After Dark, Book 6) because Rydstrom has been one of my favorite side characters (in fact, I couldn't quite enjoy Cade's story in Dark Desires After Dusk (The Immortals After Dark, Book 5) because I was more interested in what was happening with Rydstrom than with Cade), but for now, Dark Needs at Night's Edge (The Immortals After Dark, Book 4) is my favorite, flaws and all.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Needs at Night's Edge: A Must Read   December 1, 2008

[...] br / br /Unbeknownst to humankind, immortals live among us. Creatures of the Lore - vampires, Valkyrie, witches, Lykae, demons, and other magical beings are as real as you or I. Battles have been going on for centuries as different factions of the Lore vie for supremacy. But things are changing. Even as the fighting escalates, enemies have become allies, prejudices are slowly being chipped away, and love seems determined to have its say. This is the world of Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. br / br /Dark Needs at Night's Edge takes us to the haunted streets of New Orleans where Conrad Wroth, a vampire driven to madness, hunted by his enemies, and consumed by his need for vengeance, plots to kill his brothers for having turned him into what he hates. In their last effort to bring him back from the brink of destruction, Conrad's brothers capture and imprison him at Elancourt, an abandoned estate. What they don't know is that the mansion's former owner still lives there...and only Conrad can see her. br / br /Neomi Laress was once a famous ballerina, until her life was abruptly cut short by her murder. For more than eighty years she has haunted her home, unable to interact with anyone - until Conrad. Neomi is drawn to Conrad, seeing the man beneath the madness. Can Conrad overcome the darkness inside him? Will love be able to grow between a vampire and a ghost? Or will Conrad's enemies destroy them both? These questions I leave to be answered by the story. br / br /I have two confessions to make. First, I absolutely love the first four books in Cole's Immortals After Dark series. Second, I was fully prepared to dislike this book. Conrad begins the book wanting to kill his brothers, Nikolai, Sebastian, and Murdoch. After four books, two of which featured Wroth males as heroes, I am firmly attached to the Wroth brothers and did not believe I could like someone out to harm them for reasons I did not agree with. In addition, I do not, as a rule, like romances featuring ghosts. That being said... br / br /I loved this book! Cole defied my expectations, overcame my biases, and delivered a love story beyond compare. I was engrossed in Conrad's inner struggle, found myself understanding the reasons that fueled his desire for revenge, and loved his protectiveness of Neomi. I admired Neomi's inner strength, adored her quirks, and was heartbroken by her need for love. Most importantly, I was completely enthralled by this story from the very beginning. Conrad and Neomi have numerous obstacles to overcome, none the least of which is her being incorporeal. I found myself cheering them on, wondering how their burgeoning love would survive. br / br /I also cannot write this review without praising Cole's skill, not just as a storyteller, but as a writer. Conrad's thoughts, his disassociation from himself in his madness, are written in such a way that I am in awe of Cole's talent. The transition of those thoughts as he slowly begins to reclaim control is so smooth, so flawless, that after I finished Dark Needs at Night's Edge I found myself flipping back, trying to find the transition point. For this reason alone, I would recommend the book. br / br /One of my favorite aspects of this series is that characters from previous books play strong supporting roles. In Dark Needs at Night's Edge, readers get to revisit almost all the previous heroes and heroines of the series, and many more favorite characters reappear. In addition, Cole provides some tantalizing hints about her next hero and heroine, Cade and Holly, which made me grateful Dark Desires After Dusk came out a month later. br / br /For those new to Cole's world, Dark Needs at Night's Edge does stand on its own. However, for a richer read (as all the supporting characters have appeared in previous books), I recommend starting with the first Immortals After Dark story, "The Warlord Wants Forever" (in the Playing Easy to Get anthology) and then reading the entire series in order. br / br /Dark Needs at Night's Edge is a fantastic addition to Cole's already incredible series. A sexy, tortured hero, an enchanting heroine, an engaging plot, and a beautiful love story all delivered by a truly superb writer make Dark Needs at Night's Edge a must read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Neomi and Conrad   November 7, 2008
T. Patterson (usa)
Neomi was a famous ballerina from a century ago and became a ghost the night she was murdered. She is invisible to the living so she haunts her home and tries to scare away any who try to dwell within...that is until she encounters a ruthless immortal more terrifying than her ghostly essence. Conrad, as a vampire, had been consumed with his thirst for enemy blood...draining his victims which has caused madness, visible by his blood red eyes. to prevent him from harming others and keep other vampires from taking their revenge, his brothers decide to imprison him in Neomi's home thinking it was abandoned. For some reason that Neomi cannot understand Conrad can see her, and she is determined that the only person to ever see her ghostly form WILL pay her some much wanted attention. Conrad is entranced by the beautiful ghostly form he sees and is tormented with desire to have her as his own even though he is unable to touch her. When Neomi finds a way to get an earthly form, thanks to a redheaded witch, their passion ignites. Can Conrad fight his madness to keep Neomi by his side? br / br /***When this book started and I realized Conrad and Neomi couldn't touch I was worried this story would not be any good. Kresley managed to weave a fantastic tale that I feel is different from the other books in this story in a great way. Even though the main characters are not able to physically touch during the early parts of the book it did not take away from the fact that this is a great erotic romance. This is a great spin on the IMMORTAL AFTER DARK series and I am looking forward to more. br / br /Congrats Kresley, keep the IMMORTALS AFTER DARK books coming.
