Unputdownable! Watch Me won't let you go! January 9, 2009 GinRobi (Timmins, ON, Canada) Sheridan is back in Whiterock, after receiving a phone call telling her about a break in a twelve-year-old case. Twelve years ago, while parked at a lake, a stranger yanked open the truck door, shooting both Jason and Sheridan. Sheridan survived, Jason didn't. Sheridan has felt the guilt all this time, guilt that's been eating at her, for if it hadn't been for her, Jason would still be alive. While at her uncle's home, getting it ready to put on the market for sale, someone sneaks in, attacks her, and believes her to be dead as he's digging a hole to put her in. br / br /Cain's dogs wake him with their barking. He assumes it's because of a raccoon or perhaps even a bear. But the dogs' behavior suggests it could be something else, and he follows them, only to find Sheridan. Finding a thready pulse, he gets her to a hospital, and for some inexplicable reason, won't leave her out of her sight. br / br /And now people in Whiterock are turning up dead; starting first with Cain's ex-wife, Amy. Amy may no longer be married to Cain, but she's still obsessed. As much as she wants to punish him, she knows that it wasn't Cain who killed Jason, or who came after Sheridan a second time. But someone has, and they believe that the current killer is the same person from twelve years ago. Finding out who it is, is even more difficult, as Amy's twin brother is now the Sherrif, and he believes Cain is behind it all. Everyone in town is talking and speculating. Sheridan knows it wasn't him. But evidence is being framed against him, and as the terror escalates, Cain wonders how they will catch the killer in time before he strikes at Sheridan again. br / br /** SPOILER ALERT** DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. br / br /Incredible! Tense scenes, whether fighting a killer or arguments between characters, this novel packs a punch. Sheridan still believes that Jason's dead because of her. She'd had a crush on Cain for the longest time, and after making love that one time at a party that hadn't resulted in anything, she'd purposely flirted with Jason until he asked her out, all with the intention of making Cain jealous. She has no idea that the attack didn't have anything to do her whatsoever. br / br /That one night had affected Cain, even when he tried to forget it. But something about Sheridan touched him, and he couldn't get her off his mind. She'd given up her virginity to him that night. Knowing that she was out with Jason crimped his party mood and he went home, only to receive the phone call that Jason had been shot and killed and Sheridan had been shot as well. But when her very religious parents moved away shortly afterward, Cain didn't think he'd see her again, and went on his merry rebellious way. Since then, he'd been blamed for Jason's death by just about everyone, but with no evidence, nothing was done. br / br /But twelve years later, when the gun that was used was found by two boys who broke in to Cain's old cabin, suspicions began to arise again. Ned, now the sherrif, contacted Sheridan, who decided she'd go back to Whiterock to help solve the case. When the killer heard she was coming back, intent on solving the case, he was afraid she may have remembered something important from that night, and attacked her in her uncle's kitchen, believing he'd finally killed her, and took her out to Cain's land to bury her. Only, things didn't go to the killer's planning. And now, attempted attacks, more killing, more secrets about the past revealed, as the reader, you truly begin to wonder who the killer actually is. Several times I thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong. br / br /Interesting characters, tense scenes, love making at its best, a perfect mystery that results in an awesome climax and ending, I couldn't have asked for better. Then, with the story finished, I started reading an excerpt at the back of the book. Seems `The Last Stand' stories aren't over, and I can't wait until August 2009 for The Perfect Couple, the next novel in `The Last Stand' series. Keep `em coming, Ms. Novak! I'm loving them!
A strong entry in the Last Stand series January 5, 2009 Theda Ghent (Wisconsin) As a teenager living in small town Whiterock, Tennessee, Sheridan Kohl and Jason Wyatt should have had the same kind of date all other teenagers were able to have. Instead, the two of them were shot by a masked stranger while they were parked by the lake. Sheridan survived, Josh did not. And being that the only reason they were there was because Sheridan wanted to make Josh's step-brother Cain Granger jealous, she has never been able to move past the incident and still holds a great deal of guilt. After a new development in the case, Sheridan returns home and is quickly attacked and left for dead. Only to be found by Cain Granger. Both of them are shocked by the unresolved feelings left between them, and by the fact that the police seem to have very little interest in the fact that Sheridan's current attack could be linked to her old one. Whiterock police, along with the whole town, have a horrible case of tunnel vision when it comes to the shooting. And their fingers are pointed straight at Cain. And while everyone is investigating him, the killer is left to roam. And the only thing he's interested in is getting rid of Sheridan. br / br /This is a nice third addition to the Last Stand Series. These books are perfect beach reads, not too light but not too heavy. Definitely recommended to fans of any sort of thrillers.
Watch Me December 4, 2008 M. Nix Sheridan Kohl has come back to her hometown of Whiterock, Tennessee, to help solve a case. Twelve years ago, Jason Wyatt and Sheridan were shot, Jason was killed. Sheridan and her two friends Skye and Jasmine run a charity for victims of violent crimes called The Last Stand. Sheridan is only in town one day when she is brutally and almost fatally attacked. It seems someone doesn't want her re-investigating this crime. br / br /Sheridan lost her heart and her virginity to Cain Granger, Jason's stepbrother, a few weeks before Jason's murder. She and her family left town right after. Sheridan and Cain haven't seen each other in the intervening twelve years but when Cain finds her almost dead in the woods on his property he instantly becomes her protector. The history between Cain and Sheridan is thick and there are a lot of people who don't like it. Everyone seems to think Cain is guilty. Sheridan is his only supporter. Someone wants her gone though, and they are running out of time trying to find who wants her dead and why. br / br /Suspense, grizzly murders, and an intense attraction between Sheridan and Cain fill the pages of Watch Me. Long lost loves, unrequited loves, jealousy, betrayal, and a psychopath too, make it an exciting and angst filled story. Being the victim of not one, but two violent crimes, puts Sheridan in a very unique position. She's capable, strong, and beautiful. It's a very enticing combination and one Cain cannot resist. Everywhere Cain turns he faces censure and hostility. He is a very honorable and good man considering what he lives with on a daily basis. Sheridan and Cain are great together. I was cheering for them from the moment Cain picked her up off the forest floor. Watch Me is another edge-of-your-seat novel in The Last Stand series. I'm anxiously looking forward to the next one! br / br /Nannette br /Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed
#3 in the Last Stand series October 6, 2008 Colleen Laughlin (Florida) My favorite of the series! Sheridan and Cain are wonderful together. Great suspense as well! I don't know if we will get to hear about these characters again, but I sure do hope so!
Good story, bad minor characters October 3, 2008 Sara (British Columbia, Canada) Brenda Novak's Watch Me begins with Sheridan Kohl fighting her life against a man who has already started to dig her grave. Sheridan lays beaten and immobile on the forest floor but by luck her potential killer is interrupted by Cain Granger. Although he saves her life, the police focus their attention on Cain, whose past is intertwined with Sheridan. When Cain's step-brother, Jason, was shot and killed 12 years before by a man in a ski mask, a man who then turned his gun on Jason's date, Sheridan, suspicion had been directed to Cain. Sheridan could never identify Jason's killer and the mystery still haunted her. Recovering from the latest assault, Sheridan must help Cain clear his name and uncover the real murderer. br / br /I really enjoy Miss Novak's books but Watch Me fell short. Sheridan and Cain were both well written characters with a dynamite chemistry. Unfortunately the other characters whom Sheridan and Cain interact with are lack luster. They portrayed very badly a part from Marshall, Cain's grandfather. I understand the concept of foil but Miss Novak took it to an extreme. While Sheridan is beautiful and smart her counterpart and Cain's ex-love interest, is square and unattractive, not very bright and obsessed with Cain even though they broke up over 10 years before. This bothered me because I disliked focusing on Amy's bad points while we could have focused on Sheridan's good ones. Why does Amy have to be unattractive and unintelligent for Cain not to love her? I think Miss Novak needed to take a more realistic approach to her secondary characters.
