Product Description The Classic Art Series BRBRAbrams is proud to announce a major event in art history. IThe Classic Art Series/I offers a comprehensive approach to publishing the Old Masters. Commissioned from important scholars, these books reproduce every known work by their subjects in large-format color illustrations, along with a general biographical and critical essay, commentaries, and extensive documentation, including a list of collections and extensive bibliography. Printed on the very finest paper using the most sophisticated technology available today, they are intended to be both beautiful art books and lasting contributions to knowledge. BRBRThe Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525 1569) is considered to be the first Western landscape and genre painter. He has been especially beloved through the centuries for his paintings of peasant scenes. Along with an essay by Manfred Sellink, this book reprints the first biography of Bruegel, in facsimile and translation, written by Karel van Mander around 1604. The annotated catalogue includes all forty paintings and seventy drawings attributed to Bruegel in color, with numerous details, as well as his seventy-five prints.

Not a great book for the price April 6, 2008 Paulybrooklyn 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I was looking this book over at a store, and for this price it seems that Abrams could've done a MUCH better job. In general, the reproductions are pretty murky, not as good as books a fraction of the cost. There are not many close-ups (only 1 per painting), and the full paintings are presented quite small. Publishers currently refuse to print images sideways, prefering to waste more than half the page rather than compel a reader turn a book--in this case, since most Bruegel compositions are horizontal we end up with his incredibly complex paintings reproduced the size of postcards. br /There are other cheaper books that have the complete paintings of Bruegel (his output was pretty small), so this one's title is not as impressive as it seems; however, the one great contribution of this volume is that it also presents his wonderful graphic work in it's entirety.
Bruegel The Complete Paintings February 9, 2008 Zdenik Va#353;ek (Prague, the Czech Republic) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Really wonderful piece of work! It is written with an overview, in details, wisdom and in a balanced way. I am convinced that only the next generations will be able to appraise fully and in a just and fair way the importance of this painter in the context of his counterparts. The above-mentioned essential and state-of-the-art handbook is the proper step in this way. I have been enjoying this book and I have no choice but to thank for it indeed.
