Product Description For two-semester undergraduate courses in Art History Survey, and courses in Women in/and Art in departments of Art/Art History and Women's Studies. This text introduces students to the most recent and extensive scholarly research on women artists, and to gender issues relevant to the topics addressed in most survey of art history courses. Organized chronologically covering primarily western civilizations and the roles women have played in their visual cultures, it highlights contributions from Antiquity to the present. Attention is also paid to other roles for women--such as patrons, critics, and viewers--along with the ways in which women have been represented in imagery in different periods.

Great November 19, 2008 Wendy Alvarez Fast shipping and arrived on time, it's kept me going through class and survived the forces of a 1 year old.
A Lifelong Resource February 23, 2007 Joann Wright (USA) This book was published just after I took the course with the same title with the author in the 1980's. I am now a professor myself at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa. I have used this book as a resource to teach as well as to write and create presentations for workshops. It is an excellent resources, well written, comprehensive, and as pertinent today as the day it was published. It is a 'must' for any teacher involved with art, art history, women students, or women's studies. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in women's history.
Slatkin's book May 22, 2003 Another reviewer here wrote that this would be an appropriate book for a beginning art history class. Well, take it from me, an art history teacher, that the students were bored with this book. The only complaint for my Women in Art (no prerequisite required) course was that this book needed to be replaced with something more in depth.
Great Intro Book May 20, 2002 resident alien (Stillwater, OK USA) An excellent starting point for anyone looking for the basic information about women artists throughout the history, their lives, and their impact on the evolution of the Western art. It presents just a brief introduction to the most significant artists, but will make you want to learn more about every one of them.
The book is a simple introduction to the subject. June 20, 1998 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wendy Slatkin has produced an introduction to a subject which deserves a more indepth study. She offers a outline of women artists and their work that is, however, suitable for a beginning class of Art History students. It crys out for a broader scope and more detailed research, particularily in the area of 20th Century artists. It is, in this sense, an inspirational 'textbook'.
