Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This textbook is intended for a diverse audience that ranges from chemistry majors to students in any of the life sciences. The logical organization (discussion of molecular structure immediately followed by the role it plays in metabolism) leads students through the complex world of biochemistry while an impressive art program helps to guide them through up-to-date concepts. Of special interest are the new Biochemical Methods boxes in the text, PowerPoint slides for instructors, and animated and annotated Chime structures of biomolecules in the OLC.

3 out of 5 stars Full of errors   October 11, 2008
Sam (Laramie, WY)
I found that this book has great content and purpose and is especially useful when accompanied with the study guide. However, the book is full of errors in the questions ranging from typos such as saying "Ribose-5-phosphate" instead of "Ribulose-5-phospate" to errors such as using the wrong term. For example in chapter 9, question 10, the question refers to a molecule to the right as "riboflavin" when it turn, it is actually "flavin mononucleotide." These errors can be very costly if a student is still learning biochemistry and hasn't mastered the concepts yet. br / br /Overall, the content of the chapters seems to be great and full of useful information with minimal errors. The questions at the end of the chapter and the answers in the study guide are where most of the errors occur. I also found that some of the answers to the questions either did not answer the question directly or spent a lot of time explaining extra concepts outside the scope of the question that were not needed and only confuse you more. br / br /The textbook does do a good job of teaching basic, fundamental knowledge. You just have to really know your concepts to get through the questions and catch the errors. The diagrams are pretty simplistic as well, and present the concepts well. Thanks to the content of the chapters and easy to read diagrams, this book survives with three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Study Guide/Solutions Manual for the 4th Edition   August 6, 2008
Patricia DePra (Pittsburgh, PA)
This Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual (coauthors Patricia DePra, Trudy McKee, and James R. McKee) is an essential companion to McKee McKee's 4th edition textbook. br / br /In addition to the solutions to 2/3 of the end-of-chapter problems, each chapter contains a 1-page, concise outline of major concepts, additional explanations and summaries, and hints/strategies for learning the material that would benefit any student taking biochemistry. br / br /If you're purchasing the 4th edition of McKee McKee's biochemistry textbook, be sure to get the right study guide, as this review is also (incorrectly) listed with the 3rd edition text study guide reviews. br /4th edition textbook: ISBN 9780195305753 br /4th edition study guide/solutions manual: ISBN 9780195342925

5 out of 5 stars Great Supplement   May 12, 2008

I found this study guide to be absolutely necessary and immeasurably useful. There were more thorough and concise explanations of concepts than in the text. In addition, it presented key ideas in a streamlined fashion that really made studying more effective for a class that can be very labor intensive. The study guide also had studying tips that made memorization less painful (as with the amino acids for example).

5 out of 5 stars A very thorough intro to biochemistry for any grad student   July 11, 1998
11 out of 13 found this review helpful

From the point of view of biology and chemistry, this book outlines the fundamental points that are needed to understand the different processes of all cells, with a special emphasis on diseases. It has at the beginning of each chapter a short presentation of the problem to be discussed. It has an excellent set of questions at the end of each chapter. The index is very thorough and helpful and the references relate to CURRENT useful sources.
