Product Description
Ellie and Dan are living proof that opposites attract. He always follows instructions and she throws the manual away. He loves sports whereas Ellie's allergic to any form of exercise. Ellie doesn't have a mother. And Dan does - a mother who wants to take over EVERYTHING. At first Ellie is thrilled to have Linda as her adopted mother and to be a part of the close, loving Cooper family. But when she and Dan decide to get married and wedding plans progress, she starts to wonder: is it normal for Linda and Dan to speak on the phone twice a day? How on earth do they come to be having a reception with Chilean bloody seabass and humongous bloody white ribbons tied everywhere when all she wanted was a quiet registry office? In fact, is she marrying Dan OR HIS MOTHER? And Ellie's problems have just begun. When she discovers she's pregnant she realises that Linda's only been rehearsing for the real takeover. She seems to want to live her life through Ellie and in the words of the immortal Princess Diana, there are three of them in the marriage.

1 out of 5 stars Never again.   August 11, 2008
A. Lightcap (Reno, NV)
This book left a sour taste in my mouth. It's the first and only book I've read by Jane Green and I must admit, I'm not inclined to read the rest. The book moves much too quick for my liking and doesn't explain in enough detail anything. I would not recommend this book to anybody.

2 out of 5 stars Loved Mom, Hated Her   March 3, 2008
D. Bell (Olney, MD USA)
It's been a long time since I read a book in which I disliked the protagonist and liked the antagonist (Dan's mother Linda) so much. Ellie is in serious need of a psychiatrist, as her admittedly rocky childhood has left her with MAJOR issues. Linda, on the other hand, is a warm, loving, enthusiastic woman. Although she does tend to go overboard, I don't feel she's trying to run Dan Ellie's lives. But everything she do angers Ellie to the point that she sometimes feels rage. br / br /Admittedly I do understand why Ellie was dismayed when Linda bought all the baby things for her, even though I understand that it was the loving, generous gesture of a first time grandmother with much more disposable income than the parents have. She should have suggested a shopping trip for the two of them. I will grant that Linda doesn't think ahead often, but she does mean well. br / br /As for the accident which ends up causing the breach between Ellie Linda and eventually Dan Linda's separation, I can understand Ellie's anger. Linda overstepped, but considering how little time she has been allowed with her grandchild, it is understandable. Ellie should have forgiven her. br / br /I read this book shaking my head over Ellie's behavior attitude. When someone suggested therapy, she said, "It's not my style." Perhaps not, but it was what she needed. br / br /I imagine I will read more books by Jane Green; I hope I enjoy them more.

5 out of 5 stars very witty   January 8, 2008

Jane green's writting style is simple and funny. br /I have read a couple of her other books and this is my absolute favorite. br /It is very witty. Ellie made me laugh and sometimes she would get on my nerves, but I recommend it. I loved the ending. Made me get emotional.

4 out of 5 stars Well-written, well-told story all women can relate to   December 2, 2007
DENISE DITRANI (New York, NY)
Jane Green has the gift of gab - in written form! She tackled a topic all women can relate to - the overbearing, overly intrusive mother-in-law vs. you. Ellie, the main character, initially invites her prospective mother-in-law into her life because she was without a mother for most of hers. The invite turns imposing as she gets deeper into her marriage, making her husband the permanent referee. This book was so well done, I ordered 3 more Jane Green novels!!! Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars At last! A Jane Green book I liked!   November 16, 2007
Noneofyourbiz (Oak Park, IL)
I read both Bookends and To Have and to Hold and wasn't crazy about either of them. Those books were all plot with no character development. This book has at its center Ellie -- a 3 dimensional heroine with good qualities and bad. At times I ached for her, at other times I wanted to strangle her. I also really believed the way she changed as the book wore on.
