5 out of 5 stars Pirates and Mystics   November 18, 2008
TammyJo Eckhart (Bloomington, Indiana United States)
Ah, yes, the sexist military policies of the past centuries have placed the world in a precarious position now that 2+ years of passed since the plague that wiped out 99.99% of the male population. We saw this earlier in some of the previous books but in this collected set of 5 of the series comics we see in on the oceans as Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann take what they think is a cruise ship to Japan in the hopes of finding Ampersand. They never make it there as the ship they are on is attacked by the Australians out of what they claim is self-defense. Don't get too excite by the cover or the title -- yest there is some lesbian content but as we keep learning, Yorick had an extra helping of sexual conservatism than we might expect from a well-educated family and he reacts poorly when 355 and Dr. Mann seek solace in each other arms. The final comic in the book fills in a big gap about has happened to Beth in Australia and how she and Yorick's relationship worked as she falls into the hands of Aborigines still practicing their traditional beliefs.

4 out of 5 stars Weakest Since "One Small Step," But Still Some of the Best Stuff Around   March 16, 2008
Pat Shand (Freeport, NY USA)
Brian K. Vaughan continues to churn out awesome volume after awesome volume of "Y: The Last Man." This trade paperback consists of the four issue "Girl on Girl" story arc (that features Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann aboard a ship that is in big time conflict with a submarine that is a bit too close for comfort) and the one-shot "Boy Loses Girl," which gives us an update on Beth's situation. br / br /Every since the Safeword arc, "Y: The Last Man" has pretty much been solid gold through and through. So when I say that this TPB is the weakest volume in the series since the third book, that's really not a negative remark, because this was a really, really entertaining book. I wouldn't mark it as high as "Safeword" or "Ring of Truth", which contained some of the best comics I've ever read, but this is still way-above-average stuff. br / br /I wasn't in love with the story of the four-issue "Girl on Girl" arc, but it was good enough to thoroughly entertain. But then, in the last issue of this TPB, Brian gives us a non-linear, dream-like, flashback-heavy story featuring Yorick's girlfriend Beth that gives us a lot of necessary insight into her character. I'm loving Vaughan's one-shots, because he really knows how to pack an emotionally powerful story into twenty-two pages better than anyone else. br / br /8/10

4 out of 5 stars A little slow   February 7, 2008
Paul Polonskiy (St. Louis, MO USA)
Volume 6 of Y The Last Man lagged a little bit more than its predecessors. This slow pacing was not as entertaining. Also, this volume kind of went on sub-plots which really didn't add to much to the main story. Not that it was bad or anything, it's just that I could have gone without reading this volume.

4 out of 5 stars Still good, but something of a pause in the overall story   February 3, 2008
Robert Moore (Chicago, IL USA)
The fifth collection in the series, RING OF TRUTH, saw Yorick, 355, Dr. Mann, and Ampersand complete their transcontinental journey. GIRL ON GIRL sees them crossing the Pacific on the trail of Ampersand's abductor, who has taken him to Japan. It isn't that the stories here are bad; they simply aren't as good as what came before or what would come after. br / br /And yes, there is girl on girl action. Although there had been some extremely repressed sexual tension between Yorick and Agent 355 in the first few books, nothing had happened. So one could hardly blame 355 when she finds herself in a moment alone with Dr. Mann that leads to some much needed affection. Yorick, who to tell the truth is a real weenie of a character (and the series weakest element), reacts badly upon discovering them together. br / br /This isn't quite filler material, but it is close. It introduces some plot elements that lead into future issues, but I agree with those who think these issues are somewhat pedestrian.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader   September 3, 2007
Blue Tyson
Yorick is a bit confused and conflicted, when Agent 355 and Dr Mann have a fling. br / br /Apart from this, the gang hitch a ride on a pirate ship, as eventually Yorick wants to find his girlfriend Beth, who is in Australia. He finds somewhat of a kindred spirit in the pirate captain, if you forget about the fact that she is a pirate. br / br /Problems escalate when the Australian navy and spies become involved. br / br /br /
