Amazon.com Review
If you're looking for a comic book that falls outside of the usual superhero fare, IY: The Last Man/I is one of the top choices around. A creation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerrera, it's a post-apocalyptic story in which a mysterious virus has wiped out every male on Earth, except a young man named Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand. In the eighth trade paperback, IKimono Dragons/I (issues 43-46), Yorick, Agent 355, Allison, and Rose are in Japan on the trail of the abducted Ampersand. Yorick and 355 find themselves mixed up with the Japanese mafia led by a former Canadian pop star named Epiphany, while Allison and Rose hope to find some answers in Allison's mother's lab. The remaining two issues (47-48) are standalone stories, "The Tin Man" and "Gehenna" (Goran Sudzuka takes over the pencils from Guerrera, with Jose Marzan Jr. still doing the inking), which explore the histories of Allison and Israeli solder Alter. IY: The Last Man/I is part of DC s Vertigo line and has some mature content, including nudity and graphic violence. I--David Horiuchi/I

5 out of 5 stars Innovative literature   November 12, 2008
The Red Hare (In A Much Better Country, United States)

The best way to relay my surprise and ultimate devotion to this particular work is to describe my initial reaction to a summary by a friend who'd read it. She said, "It's about the world after all the men but one dies." I thought to myself, well, it certainly will be a more peaceful world. Brian Vaughn makes an incredibly valid arguement to the contrary and I had to reflect on myself and how I would handle a world where 90% of pilots, truck drivers and other male-dominated professions were simply wiped out and resources were scarce - let alone the inner demons we would have to face and conquer. This is a magnificient work, remarkable in its scope and depth of understanding of human nature. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this installment of Y because of the unexpected surprises and plot twists here. :)

4 out of 5 stars Good but not jaw dropping   September 9, 2008

br /There aren't any jaw dropping revelations or cliffhangers in this volume but the writing and the storyline reaches a higher level of sophistication. Several of the back-stories are also fleshed out.

4 out of 5 stars Issues #43-48 of the Vaughan/Guerra series   July 5, 2008
K. W. Schreiter (Conshohocken, PA)
This trade paperback collects issues #43-48 of the excellent DC Comics series. Co-creator Pia Guerra pencils the four-issue "Kimono Dragons" story arc. Yorick, 355, Dr. Mann and Rose travel to Japan in search of Yorick's monkey Ampersand who may hold the cure for the plague that wiped out all other male mammals. The group encounters a bizarre remnant of the Yakuza while Dr. Mann searches for her mother's lab. The remaining two issues that were penciled by Goran Sudzuka are respective one-shots that provide backstory on Dr. Mann and Alter, the Israeli soldier that has been pursuing Yorick.

4 out of 5 stars Consistent Quality, But I'm Still Waiting...   April 17, 2008
Pat Shand (Freeport, NY USA)
As with most recent "Y: The Last Man" collections, this consists of a story arc and a few one-shots. The main arc has Yorick finally catching up with Ampersand, but there are many things--including a Canadian pop star with militant Japanese groupies--standing in his way. The first one-shot covers Dr. Mann's past (in a similar way to how they dealt with 355's in the previous volume. The second one-shot, which is the last issue in the book, is also a flashback, though this one gives us the history of Alter, the main villain of the series. br / br /Again like the previous volume, these comics are very entertaining and tell great stories, but they seem to be leading up to something bigger and better. So, as the title says, the quality of this book is consistently good. Vaughan hasn't missed a beat since Volume Four. Only thing is, there hasn't been anything that's totally amazed me since Volume Five, so I'm waiting for that. Knowing Vaughan, though, and knowing that there are only two volumes left in this series, I have no doubt that I'm about to be wowed. br / br /8/10
