For young Lady Lucinda Denbigh life is not as sweet as she once envisioned it being with her handsome, young nobleman husband, Lord Denbigh. After being married only a short while she quickly learns that is was her money he lusted after, not her. And being the gentleman that he is, he takes it upon himself to remind her of that daily. Constantly telling her she is fat and ugly, he is always keeping her on diets and restricted her food from the kitchen. br / br /When the prospect of spending an entire weekend with Denbigh and his retched friends, being ridiculed and laughed at, takes her over the edge, she finally gets the courage to leave. She sneaks out after everyone's asleep and flees through the streets of London. br / br /Being the smart girl that she is, when they married she kept a flow of money coming from her family straight to her and that is what she uses to finance her way out of her personal hell. Lord Denbigh has habit of gambling and an even nastier habit of losing. br / br /In the midst of her escape a woman comes up to her, thrusts a young child into her arms and tells her she'll be right back. She quickly realizes that the woman is not returning and that is confirmed by a passing boy who saw the transaction. His first wife died in childbirth and he still lives with the blame, vowing never to marry again. His return home is not an easy one for him - his father left the estate in a terrible way and it's up to Hugo to return it the glory that it once was. br / br /As Hugo and Lucinda get to know each other they soon feel a connection neither of them can explain. To Hugo, she is not fat, but soft and voluptuous - a real woman he can love. Lady Lucinda Denbigh is a plump, statuesque woman who is constantly abused physically and emotionally by her husband. He only married Lucinda for her allowance and an heir. She has yet to produce the heir, so he abuses her as he believes she is barren. br / br /However, one day, in the dead of the night, she escapes and runs away. As she is waiting for the train, a young misfortunate woman heaves her young daughter into Lucinda's arms, asking her to watch the child while she goes to apply for a job. Soon, Lucinda finds that the woman just left, leaving the child Lucinda's responsibility. She names the child Sophia, and instantly falls in love with her. br / br /Lucinda finds a home to rent, and begins to make new friends in the small town. She changes her name and is careful what she reveals about herself, so her husband doesn't find her. Her landlord, Lord Hugo Wanstead, is fresh home after being gone for years. He has a battle wound that won't heal and finds his solace in brandy. When he meets Lucinda, he is besotted. br / br /Together, they create fireworks. Before long, though, Lucinda's past catches up with her, and she is not sure if Hugo and her relationship will be strong enough to withstand the heat. br / br /This is a wonderful book. Beautiful historical background with two characters who just are not perfect. It makes the story so much more real when you can relate to them. I look forward to reading more from this author. br / br /Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended for those who love historical romance.

Lady Lucinda Denbigh is stuck in an awful marriage that contains a husband who both physically and emotionally abuses her. Lucinda can't tolerate it anymore. She runs away. Along the way she meets Lord Hugo Wanstead, a dashing man on the outside but a bear on the inside. With the death of his wife haunting Wanstead; he has become bitter. Plus it's been way too long since he felt the touch of a woman. When Wanstead invited Lucinda into his home, he wasn't prepared for the attraction he would feel towards Lucinda. The first time Lucinda met Hugo he was seemed unapproachable but after spending time with Hugo and living at his home, Lucinda has come to realize that under Hugo's tough persona that he just might have a heart of gold. The only thing left between these two is...who is going to make the first move. br / br /Historical romances will hold a dear place in my heart. I used to read them all the time, then slowly moving away from them but recently found myself going back to them. There is just something about time period books that I love. Every time I read a historical romance novel, I am instantly transported back in time to a place where the people are friendly and chivalry was at its highest. Regrettably though I have had a hard time finding a good historical romance book till now. The Lady Flees Her Lord is not only good but a winner! Michelle Ann Young should be proud of this book as it is everything a fan like I needed to really get excited about these types of stories again. I gladly look forward to reading Michelle's next release. br /

I really loved this book. This author doesn't write a 'formula' romance. As in her previous book, No Regrets, the heroine is not the typical romance heroine. Lucinda is described as a glorious Rubenesque beauty which is a nice change from willowy, dewy, young heroines. It was a pleasure to read her story and to see her progress from a fearful woman to a woman of great strength and courage. I thought that the romantic tension in the story was great and I really like the hero, Hugo. Try this new author, you won't be disappointed!
