By opinion poll of the members of the European Academy of Film and Television (1995), this motion picture was recognized one of the worlds ten best films (8th place). Its original title /The Andrei Passion/. The historic background Russia in the 15th century, the princes feuds, the internal strife. Though it in no way overshadows the films basic philosophical message. The perennial question of "artist versus authority", if the loneliness of a genius and his ability to rise above the crowd, the problems of faith and faithlessness are examined through the prism of a life story of the great Russian icon painter Andrei Rublyov. The title part was the first film role for the outstanding Russian actor Anatoly Solonitsyn who was to become a Tarkovsky actor for many years. This is the final cut December 12, 2005 Pinaki Chandrasekhar (Hawaii, USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This Ruscico version is the final cut officially released by Tarkovsky. The Criterion collection is not and is 30 minutes longer. It's nice to see both and compare, although this is the chiseled and final product. This is the version released all over the world. However, Criterion markets it's version more aggressively and is more popular. The criterion version is called the Scorcese version.
Many Languages!! December 26, 2004 skull (Mexico) 8 out of 17 found this review helpful
The people of RUSCICO consider all the world, instead of Criterion because they only consider the people of the USA and they ignore everybody else who doesnt speak English. I recommend you to buy this DVD if you dont speak English and You will comprehend and enjoy better this beautiful spiritual masterpiece. I HATE CRITERION!!!!!!!
