Product Description PLOT SUMMARY: Aging opera singer Joachim Dallayrac retires from the stage and retreats to the countryside to school two young singers, Sophie and Jean. Although the rigorous training takes its toll on both teacher and students, there is plenty of time for relationships to develop between the three. Based on their teacher's reputation, Sophie and Jean are invited to participate in a singing contest staged by Prince Scotti. Scotti's protege is set up to get revenge for Scotti's defeat at the hands of Dallayrac in a similar competition many years ago. The young students overcome Scotti's trickery to win the competition. Not Butchered, Subtitles Work Fine October 2, 2008 Opera Lover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While one of the reviews says that this film was butchered in Korea, my copy is just fine. It's semi-widescreen and there were no problems with the subtitles. I can switch between Korean, English, and none. br / br /There is one scene in English which has French subtitles (since it's a French film). If you have the English subtitles turned on, they pop up over the French, but that's a couple minutes out of an entire film. I believe the French subtitles were hard-coded into the film, and the English subtitles were put on so that the same track would work for English speakers and hearing-impaired. br / br /Since the English scene is a couple minutes long, it does not detract in any way from my enjoyment of the film. br / br /"Butchered" makes it sound as though the whole film is done this way (which would be awful). Perhaps the writer didn't bother watching the rest of the film.
Beware June 5, 2008 C.A. Arthur (Tacoma, Washington) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This brilliant film was butchered in Korea. It's dubbed into English, and comes with French subtitles. The singing is out of sync with the picture from the beginning. When you push "English" subtitles, they crudely appear over the French subtitles at the bottom of the screen. Ignore this one!
It's a win win situation!!! You can't lose! June 1, 2007 Gilson Gomes Filho (Brazil) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Simply magnificent! I had watched this movie in VHS maybe 15 years ago and now that I am back studying music and singing in a Choir I decided to search for the DVD in order to show it to my peers. I was surprised to discover that it was not released in DVD here in Brazil. So... internet to the rescue!!! I found it thru Amazon and can't wait to see it again. This movie is definitely among the 5 best movies I have ever seen and let me tell you I am a maniac for movies and popcorn, so don't think twice, you will simply love it and that's guaranteed!!
one of the best movies ever viewed March 26, 2007 None Whatsoever (Orange County, CA - Surrounded by dogs, smog, rightwing extremists racists) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
fantastic screenplay, a poetically beautiful love story, a profound romance, a wonderful experience in great music. inspirational opera teacher, beautiful soprano actress. the final duel between two teachers' tenor students. what a treat! trying very hard to get a dvd, but the price simply too outrageously high, making it become one in my lifetime wish list.
