Gem of a Film! September 17, 2008 Zeek (Lancaster, PA USA) This film, based on French playwright and actor Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (also known by his stage name Moliere) came out of no where for me. (Saw it on blockbuster online and couldn't resist!) br / br /Set in 1658 France, the movie begins with Moliere (Romain Duris) and his troop returning from a tour of France where he's become famous for the comedic plays he writes and stars in. Disdaining what has made him famous, more than anything he wants to be known as a serious play write. br / br /In fact, he's determined to perform his latest play, a tragedy, no matter what his new royal benefactor demands. When he is summoned to a wealthy home for mysterious reasons he promptly changes his mind, if a comedy is what they want, then a comedy he will give them- only this time, with the sting of truth. br / br /The movie moves back in time to a period in Moliere's life when he was thrown into debtors prison. Jourdain (Fabrice Luchini), a wealthy man, promptly pulls him out of prison and offers to pay his debts if Moliere would teach him how to act so he could win the cold heart of a society widow who doesn't even know Jourdain exists. br / br /Jourdain arranges for Moliere to stay at his estate disguised as a priest so that his wife Elmire (Laura Morante) will not become suspicious. Only she's no dummy and Moliere finds himself helplessly falling for her. And despite the fact he thinks Jourdain is a fool, Moliere goes along with the farce- to make the money ... and to win the heart of Elmire! br / br /It's truly charming the way everything plays out from that point forward. (Like others, I was reminded more than once of Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors while watching this- humor that I just adore.) One particular scene involving another suitor of the society lady's who pawns Jourdain's extravagant gifts for her off as his own, had me howling with laughter. (Poor Doggie!) br / br /The ending is very touching and it's here that we fully understand the pain behind Moliere's comedy. Delightful and poignant at times I enjoyed this little gem! br /
great movie August 29, 2008 Kitty S (Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful foreign movie! So often foreign films are depressing, artsy or down right weird. But this one is funny and wonderful, the acting is superb, and the scenes are reminiscent of Moliere's work. br /The film is entirely in French, with English subtitle option. The story fictionally depicts what could have happened to Moliere during a short period of time early in his career. The story involves events which were supposedly the basis for his famous comedies. Simple storyline, great acting...a 'must see', if only for the "acting lesson".
For Moliere lovers only July 15, 2008 Frenchprof (Angola, IN United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked the movie but want to warn you that a knowledge of Moliere's works is very necessary to appreciate the humor. If you aren't familiar with the plays, you will probably think this movie is fairly boring. If you know some, especially two: Tartuffe, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, you'll love it.
The Raise of the Fraconphonie May 15, 2008 Rodrigo E. Toledo (New York, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thre is no doubt about the fame of Moliere in France and many countries. He represents this part of the universal history when some countries in Europe decide to improve their national lenguages. Shakespeare in Elizabeth's England, Moliere in France and of course Cervantes in Spain. br / br /Today nobody can doubt about the fame of Shakespeare or Cervantes... But apparently the french writer came late in reafirming the importance of the french lenguage. br / br /The movie remind me in moments the awarded movie "Shakespeare in Love". Similar topics: ambition to be known and respected by the society, love and romance; and of course you need to include comedy. br / br /It's a good movie and a good way to try to rescue the french lenguage.
Moliere April 15, 2008 Freeman (Florida) Fantastic romantic comedy with clever twists. Enjoyable throughout. The original music is beautiful. I am smiling just thinking about this movie!
