4 out of 5 stars Asus Netbook   March 20, 2010
Marcio Carneiro Da Silva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
Very good equipment. Bright screen, with good definition. XP runs really well (programs open fast and processing time is really fair), but would prefer to have windows 7. Battery really lasts!

The only problem I realized later on is that the wifi is not really good (connection lost more frequently and with lower signal detected when compared to my HP notebook).

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, Worst Customer Service -- AMAZON PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!!   March 19, 2010
    Gerry Wang (Raleigh, NC)
I ordered my ASUS eee PC in Aug of 2009. I was excited to get it. The problems soon started after I received it.

First, the hard drive. It was loud and hot and every time it parked it made a very audible, very annoying sound. When I contacted ASUS about it they were dumbfounded. I finally found the application "quietHDD" which was on the user forums. It worked, no thanks to ASUS.

Second, the battery life. Great when I got it and used it, with about 8 hours 40 minutes of run time with wireless networking and bluetooth on. 3 months later about 6 hours; 5 months later about 4 hours 20 minutes. As of the end of January 2010 it was averaging about 3 hours 55 minutes and throughout this time I never made any changes to my profile (still use bluetooth mouse, still use wireless networking).

Third, the charger. Have you ever seen the old horror movies where the mad scientist lights up the Jacob's Ladder (two metallic rods and an arc of electricity travels up their lengths)? Using the charger is like that. You sometimes get a noticeable pop/arc when you plug it in as it does not seem well designed for inrush -- and man does it get hot. When you initially charge your low battery that thing cooks. I recommend putting a potholder or some metallic heat sink under it so it doesn't burn your rug/floor/table.

Fourth and worst of all, the customer service. Their online forms seem professional enough but pray you don't need to return anything or get service because brother the nightmare will begin. Long story short, they don't respond within 48 hours of your RMA request (even though it says they will on their website), they don't give you any meaningful help/response, and they ping-pong you back to the online or phone RMA support page to "please fill out the following form in order to submit your claim for service" when they actually do respond (usually two to three weeks after your request). Since my laptop is within one year it is "covered" by their warranty but I have been bounced to the RMA form FOUR TIMES and still no RMA number to return it. I am now worried they are going to drag it out another 6 months until my warranty expires. (Please note: If you're willing to give up your credit card number you can be eligible for a special RMA service known as X-Ship, which is sort of a reseller thing: You sign away legal claims and you agree to let them charge you fees if the item is not returned in 14 days, if additional service is required, etc. Like I'm going to trust them now?)

Also, audio quality. Well, it's crap and I know it because I tried it out in the Best Buy before I committed. Just wanted to put that in for all the people thinking they're getting surround sound from this thing, but then again it's a netbook so you can't really ding them for that (and I don't).

Anybody who says ASUS service is great or their eee PC netbook is of the highest quality is no doubt a troll working for ASUS in Fremont or elsewhere. You don't have to believe me -- take a look at the Better Business Bureau's rating for yourself:

    [...]

ASUS has not delivered on its eee PC. It looks great, it has the features I want (mostly) and their price point is competitive but bottom line is it is poor quality, it probably was not adequately tested before FCS and their customer service is horrid -- and these qualities should not be tolerated on Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Please avoid this computer...   March 15, 2010
    Jacob A. Foreman
I'll be honest with you, this is my first time writing a review for any type of product purchased online. Typically, I'm at least somewhat satisfied with what I receive and the negative issues that I deal with can be overlooked. Sadly, that is not the case with my Asus Eee PC. I will never purchase another Asus product again, and I plan to go out of my way to mention this to others when given the opportunity. Since I purchased it in August '09, it has been nothing but one issue after another.

I purchased this computer simply because it was smaller than a laptop. I'd planned to take it to class with me for nothing more than simple note-taking, and maybe the occasional web-browsing at home. I stopped taking it to class with me after a month because it wasn't worth the hassle of dealing with all of the problems.

Apparently, the battery is a common issue with Asus. Sadly, I am one of the unlucky ones who has had to experience this, myself. Within less than a month, the battery was no longer lasting its advertised "10.5 hours." Even in power saving mode, with all extraneous devices turned off (bluetooth, camera) and only running a simple word program during my 50 - 90 minute classes, the battery barely made it through the day. Finally, one fateful day, the battery completely discharged while I was using it. I plugged it in and allowed it to charge for a full 48 hours before even powering it on again, but the battery had apparently been forever changed. From that moment on, the battery would no longer charge above 97%. Running on the battery got me about 3 hours of life (on power saver), at which point the charge was at 40%. Once reaching 40%, the computer would die. I don't mean it would shut down; the battery would just die. At 40%. I've never once been able to take the computer off of its power supply for any reasonable amount of time since. Part of the reason I wanted this Eee PC was the long battery life. What a disappointment.

Dealing with customer service has also been an ordeal in and of itself. I've been trying for over 6 months now to have the battery replaced. I've talked to them through an online chat, I've talked to them through email, and I've dealt with them over the phone (when they actually answer the phone). Each time I've had to interact with them, they have been illiterate (online and email), unhelpful, and nearly impossible to understand (on the phone). I've been told at least 5 times now that in order to fix my faulty battery, all I have to do is take it out and put it back in. Or that I can discharge it completely (this is after telling them that it WILL NOT discharge below 40%). I've also been told that I can calibrate the battery in the BIOS, though no one can ever explain to me how that is supposed to be done (believe me, I've asked for instructions). Every time I've spoken to them I've had these suggestions given to me. You'd think that when they pull up my name and account record they would see that I've gone through this multiple times already. I just want a new battery. Finally, after 5 months of dealing with the runaround (and literally TWO days before my 6 month warranty was out), I was able to get them to authorize a return. This was over two months ago. All I had to do, they said, was fax over my credit card information and my invoice. Well, I've done that twice now. I've talked to them on the phone about it. They never get my information. It has me wondering if their fax machine is set up to to just spit their faxes straight into the trash can. I'll be faxing all of this over to them again tomorrow. Here's hoping it actually arrives.

Aside from this battery issue, the computer has been a host of other problems. One is a simple malware/trojan that, though I can't blame it on the computer as far as I know, has me suspicious, seeing as how every computer in this house has had the same sort of virus protection and not one of them has ever been infected with any sort of malware. Considering it seems to have been on there since day 1, I wonder if it didn't come installed with some sort of annoying pop-up generating software. Whether due to the malware or some other issue, I've had to completely clean sweep the hard drive because it would not start up--it reached the startup screen and immediately went to the blue screen. It's a good thing I purchased that external CD/DVD drive so that I could actually run the reboot disc.

The computer constantly freezes. One browser window open, with no other programs running, is apparently too much for this thing to handle. I seem to get the 'hourglass' every five minutes and it lasts longer than my patience can tolerate, a lot of the time. And I'm a pretty patient guy. Programs are constantly freezing up, 'encountering a problem and needing to close.' I realize it is running a Windows OS, but so does every other computer we've owned. We have a desktop that runs Vista, and I've encountered a minute FRACTION of the issues I'm facing with this Eee PC. Our 9 year old dinosaur desktop is faster than this 8 month old monstrosity.

Upon original purchase, I installed a 2GB RAM card to replace the 1GB that came with it. It literally did nothing to improve the computer's speed. It takes an extreme amount of time to get programs to open. Even something as simple as Microsoft Word would have me tapping my foot in class, waiting for it to open. I'd miss a good sized chunk of the lecture if I didn't arrive ten minutes early to get set up. And if your web page, powerpoint or pdf document has images on it? Don't expect to be able to scroll your screen. I am dead serious about this. The computer cannot handle any larger graphics or file sizes. Pdfs are impossible to use because it just cannot load them. Each time you move the page down, it has to take 2 minutes to load the new lines of the document. It's ridiculous.

Aside from those intricate issues, here are a few more:
-The camera is crap. It cannot take pictures because it darkens everything (no matter how bright a room you're in) and does not allow for ANY sort of adjustment of settings.
-The microphone is practically useless; it's just not sensitive enough. You have to scream to be heard.
-The speakers may as well not even be there. Completely useless. You have to use earphones if you want to hear anything.
-The shell construction is iffy. The seashell case makes it always appear dirty and is very easily scratched up. The plastic on the base part (the part that holds the keyboard) is not very well sealed together. The area on the front where the lights are makes a constant 'clicking' noise while my hand is rested on it, because the pieces of plastic are being pushed together from the weight of my hand. Every little movement makes it creak and click. The screen area is actually starting to warp and bend. The computer no longer closes flat--the right side is at a noticeable angle. I have no idea how this could have happened.
-No usable preinstalled software. I'm surprised this thing didn't come with a free trial of AOL.

So, to sum everything up, I am looking forward to the day that I replace this Eee PC with something that doesn't annoy me every time I have to look at it. I will never buy an Asus product again, and I would recommend to anyone thinking of purchasing it that they AVOID at all costs. It's cheap, I know. But please realize that you get what you pay for. The small amount of money you will save buying this netbook is not worth the hassle you will have to endure once you have it. Buy something else.

1 out of 5 stars No Power = No Computer   March 14, 2010
    R. Spencer
I purchased this netbook in September, 2009 for myself. Purchased another in December, 2009 as a gift.

Power supply stopped working. Googled Asus Eee PC 1005HA power supply to find this appears to be a common problem for Asus.

    Battery is at 2%.

Called Amazon (seller) and was told I have to go through Asus for warranty. Went to Asus's web site and conducted search on the power supply with no matches? Tried further and received following:
    Dear ASUS User
Due to vast number of connections online, the page that you requested cannot be displayed properly. Please re-connect using any of the following URL. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Global Taiwan Europe China

Now I have to search the net to find a reliable power supply.

I would not purchase this product again.

4 out of 5 stars Mediocre quality, poor customer service, but decent netbook   March 12, 2010
    Charlie (Michigan USA)
    Asus 1005HA-PU1X

The Asus Eee PC Seashell design is very slick. I bought the 1005HA-PU1X based on its styling and features. The 1005HA-PU1X is one of the few netbooks to offer: Bluetooth, 2.0MP webcam, WiFi b/g/n, and easily upgradeable RAM in an affordable package with 10+ hours of battery life. However, there are some major drawbacks to buying an Asus.

The first thing I usually do with a new PC purchase is format the HD and do a clean install of an OS. In this instance, I installed Windows 7 32-bit Professional (full version) and do not regret this decision for many reasons. I also maxed out the RAM to 2GB, even though Windows 7 only uses about 500MB, up to 1GB when lots of apps are running. Windows 7 makes the netbook perform so much better than with XP or Vista. My Dell Mini 9 has XP and it boots slower and runs slower than the 1005HA with W7! The Mini 9 has a N270 processor with 2GB RAM while the 1005HA has a marginally faster N280 processor and 2GB RAM.

The BIOS upgrade procedure is very cumbersome unless you use the Windows-based Asus update. I did not figure this out until I dug around the internet to find a solution. AFUDOS is a horrible piece of software. None of the Asus BIOS update programs allow downgrading for BIOS flashes, so make sure you really want to upgrade.

The compact charger than came with the 1005HA gets extremely/excessively hot during recharging. It also makes an audible hum. There were some complaints about earlier chargers, but the problems have been supposedly fixed with the Delta-manufactured chargers. The blue LED is bright enough to be distracting at night. I couldn't sleep with it lit so I flipped it upside down. The charging system on the 1005HA is very funky. With all of my Dell laptops, you can yank the power cord between 95%-100% and be able to charge it again upon replugging. The 1005HA does NOT charge unless you drop it below 95%. It is not software/OS dependent - I verified this behavior using Windows XP, 7, and even Ubuntu 9.10! As long as you drop it below 95%, it will charge it up to 100%. However if you pull it before it drops below 95%, it will give you the dreaded "Plugged in, not charging" message. The battery will also self-discharge at 100%, so even if you keep it plugged in, it will allow it to slowly drop below 95%.

That said, I've gotten up to 14 hours of battery life with this netbook. I typically get 9-10 hours on one charge. It's awesome to bring this netbook into a classroom where there is a HUGE pile of AC adapters/extension cords/power strips running around the floor to power HP, Dell, and Mac laptops while I pull out the 1005HA without any power cords. I take Saturday classes so I can run my netbook for the full Saturday without ever charging it. Windows 7 has superior power management options over XP, so you can tweak a bunch of settings to conserve power. I use my Bluetooth mouse and WiFi connection in class, so it wasn't like I babied it. I hear the N450-based Atom processors can get up to 14 hours advertised, so considering I have gotten up to 14 hours with my N280, it's all good.

The LED backlit LCD screen is very dark. There are 15 brightness settings, but even at full brightness it wasn't nearly as bright as the LED backlit LCD screens on my Dell Mini 9, Dell Studio 1537, or Dell Inspiron 1545. The viewing angle on the 1005HA is also extremely narrow. You have to sit in front of it to see anything clearly. However, the image quality is very crisp for such a small screen and low resolution.

The built-in speakers are absolutely rubbish. It actually hurts my ears to listen to my favorite songs. The best way to describe the audio quality is to imagine hooking up a pair of headphones and turning up the volume. There's an excessively scratchy and tincan-like quality.

The SD/SDHC slot was extremely tight. It took off the label from my Kingston SDHC card and scratched the heck out of the blank plastic SDHC chip that comes with the 1005HA. The cards will NOT eject properly either. Upon closer examination, I found the internal shield/sleeve wasn't made properly. My Dell Mini 9, Studio, and Inspirons all have very free moving SDHC slots.

The keyboard feels very flimsy. The keyboard flexes when you type, and the Esc key was actually tilted on mine. It sat lower in one corner, suggesting another manufacturing defect. I decided to replace it under warranty, and to evaluate Asus's warranty process against Dell. I had to email tech support to get the phone number. I called and a very rude lady tried to get me to send my entire netbook back to replace the keyboard. I asked for just the keyboard and she emailed me a form that required my credit card ahead of time. I also had to pay return shipping out of pocket! With Dell, I can use the Live Chat and ask for a new keyboard which they will ship out next day for no charge. They will also give me a return label for no charge return shipping. Asus's customer service is pretty poor compared to Dell. The overall quality of the 1005HA isn't as good as Dell's Mini either. I only bought the 1005HA because I wasn't able to build a Mini 10 the way I wanted (BT w/ WiFi N w/ 2.0MP webcam).

The Ethernet port location is awkward. I've almost accidentally connected USB devices to that port, and it might have shorted out a few connections had I done so. It might because of how many laptops I have that have USB ports in that sport (right hand corner near monitor hinge).

The 1005HA comes with a charger and a small neoprene sleeve. The sleeve is a little tight to use, but works well as basic storage for the 1005HA. I recommend a more secure netbook case/bag though.

Pros: Inexpensive, lightweight, and compact. With Windows 7, it becomes a very powerful netbook that runs a lot of office apps very smoothly.

Cons: Asus quality is mediocre at best, customer service sucks compared to Dell. I'd rather have bought a Mini 10 but the 1005HA had all of the features I wanted.

    Overall: 4/5 stars.
