A Time in History April 24, 2003 Rue L. Cromwell (Lawrence,, Kansas USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great opportunity to get a complete CD on the work of a famous but often overlooked person. Th composer, Vincenzo Galilei, was Galileo's dad. Records indicate that he had a significant fatherly influence upon his son, Galileo Galilei, the famous physicist. But Vincenzo was a creator in his own right. Playing the lute, teachng music, and composing music, he invented a kind of musical scale to which words could be more adapted. Compared to other lute music of the time you often get a feeling in his music of the contemporary and traditional folk song. Prior to him, of course, music in the Western world was primarily religious and not to be sung, at least beyond Gregorian chanting. So Vincenzo could be considered a father or forerunner of folk music. Also, just as notable, his adaptation of innovative scale opened the road for--what else?!--the Italian opera. Should I just say "opera?" Probably not surprising, Vinenzo Galilei's astounding creativity was not taken kindly by his own teacher and many of his peers, who were committed to the traditional ways of doing things. So he should be remembered for his stubborn courage. Somehow perhaps he should be known best of all for fathering a child who apparently learned from him, during his poverty-stricken times from Lucca to Florence, that one can leave tradition and see a different way of doing things. To appreciate Vincezo's music fully, listen first to some lute compositions of his contempories and then listen to Vincenzo Galilei and feel the difference. Rue L. Cromwell, Lawrence, Kansas
