Dan Aykroyd and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) take turns telling how the Blues Brothers came to be, in a restaurant interview with Tom Davis (once upon on a time teamed with Al Franken on Saturday Night Live). For those who don't know, the Blues Brother are Joliet Jake Blues (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd), two black-clad R & B artists who made it big with recurring appearances on Saturday Night Live in the late 1970s, and with the number-one hit "Soul Man," and of course in the hit 1980 movie, The Blues Brothers. The conceit of the restaurant interview allows Aykroyd to give some much-needed background to the origins of the act he and Belushi developed. It also serves as a lead-in to live footage, the real appeal of the video, which is an anthology of Saturday Night Live performances (including the first one where they were dressed in Killer Bees costumes), and concert footage from the 1979 U.S. tour. A must-have for Blues Brothers fans, the DVD also includes an instructional video for those who want to learn blues harmonica. --Jim Gay

4 out of 5 stars The Best of the Blues Brothers   November 8, 2009
Bruce A. Ingebo (Lacey, WA USA)
Good music. I enjot listening to the Blues Brothers. They give a little different interpretation to some of the classic songs. Surprising how good Belushi and Aykroid are as singers.

When the Blues Brothers are singing, it's excellent.
When Elwood is doing the interview parts it's boring.

4 out of 5 stars For fans   January 21, 2009

The framework for this collection of live Blues Brothers performances is a pseudo-documentary retrospective featuring both Dan Ackroyd and Elwood Blues. The production values on the live recordings is uneven, but they all manage to capture the unique energy of the Blues Brothers.

It's an interesting hour. Beyond the performances, the interviews provide interesting insights into the characters and their history.

But this is more than an intellectual exercise. This DVD has moments where real emotion comes through. Ackroyd and his alter ego both loved their performing partners, and they both still feel and carry that loss with them.

IT may not be the best thing for someone who's just starting to get into the Blues Brothers - for that I'd suggest Briefcase Full of Blues and the first movie. If you're already a big fan, this is something you should get for your collection.

I loved this DVD. All kinds of stuff I have never seed. I loved the stories from the band. Great footage. I don't know why some people are so hard on this. I loved it and if you are a fan of the Blues Brothers you will love it too. Enjoy~I did and will again....
