This is a wonderful book if your looking some place to start as an artist. Can be helpful to the experiance or some one caught inbetween. I also suggest to the company's webstie wwww.artmarketing.com . this book help tremendously!
Well worth reading... November 22, 2004 a reader (New York, NY USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is one book that a working artist can actually learn from. It covers many topics that other books do not even touch on. Although some information needs updating (i.e. websites and books), most of the info in the book makes it well worth reading.
Finally! A book that answers questions! September 20, 2004 DeBorah Beatty (Walla Walla, WA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I must admit I have read numerous marketing books for art-related ventures and this is the very first out of all of them that actually addresses what is involved, how you get started, WHY you need to do a certain thing and what sort of resources you're going to need. It also has helpful checklists at the end of each chapter to keep you on track. A definite must have for the reference bookshelf for any serious artist/craftsperson.
Better Choices Are Out There! July 7, 2004 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
In preparation for teaching a class in marketing for creative professionals I purchased this book. Although it says it was revised in 2000, I found some egregious errors, one of which was a listing for a book that's out of date and out of print. Carroll Michael's book, How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist, is a far better reference and empowers the artist in his/her efforts. Smith tends to buy into some of the 'starving artist' concepts and, instead of cheering artists on, creates some real barriers to success.
a good starter book May 27, 2004 A.L. (Boston, MA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a great introduction to the practical side of the fine art business.brIt touches on general themes and gives resources/ contacts for further help.brSome of the tips are pretty intuitive.... such as get a tax number, save your receipts, etc brOn the other hand, I found the sample contracts for sales, models etc. to be one of the most helpful parts of the book.brIf you wish for a more comprehensive look at the legal side of fine art check out legal guide for the visual artist by tad crawford.
